Canonical releases its latest report on the trends, challenges in cloud adoption and the future of cloud computing in the coming years. The ‘Ubuntu Server and Cloud Survey’ which survey saw participation from 3,100 Ubunut Server and Cloud users across the globe highlights that while the demand for private cloud continues to dominate, hybrid cloud model adoption is finding more acceptance from the cloud users. More than 70 percent of the respondents consider Ubuntu as a ‘viable’ platform for cloud-based deployments.

Around 52 percent of the survey respondents acknowledged that they plan to build a private cloud in the coming year, while 31.3 percent of the participants have plans for public cloud deployment. Hybrid cloud is also being considered as an area of investment which can brings faster returns. Cloud solutions and service providers including Google Cloud Platform, Amazon EC2, and Microsoft Azure continue to garner significant attention from prospective cloud customers, the survey suggests.

Challenges
Security and data privacy tops the list of challenges/hurdles that hinder cloud adoption. Second comes the cost involved in taking the cloud initiatives closely followed by the complexity involved in managing the cloud.

Private cloud infrastructure
Cloudstack dominates as the widely implemented private cloud infrastructure followed by OpenStack, VMware vCloud comes third. The striking observation from the survey is that more than 60 percent of the respondents believe OpenStack has the capability to deliver on mission-critical workloads. This trust holds great promises for the open source cloud technologies in the modern mission-critical cloud deployments.

Type of workloads – what’s on the cloud
Among the workloads deployed on the cloud, database leads with 52.1 percent followed by development and testing workloads standing at 41.5 percent. Virtualization is being implemented on cloud infrastructure by 37.2 percent and 27.7 percent of respondents acknowledged to have Big Data and analytics workloads on cloud. Other workloads and services that are run on the cloud which are mentioned in the survey include clustering, CRM, systems management, and scientific applications which are implemented on the cloud at a relatively lower margin.

IoT and SDN
The report suggests that the current technology evolution concerning IoT and Software Defined Networking (SDN) are the biggest drivers for the increased cloud adoption. The report also highlights technology such as Docker is now being implemented in databases, dev and testing.
