For executing three bio-refinery projects, based on respective proprietary second-gen biorefinery (2G) technology oil marketing companies (OMCs), Praj is on track, and is working on an integrated demo plant and added compressed bio-gas (CBG), for technology tank.

For conversion of cellulosic biomass to second-gen renewable fuels, Praj has created a technology, which also converts cellulosic biomass to biogas and chemicals. Being the first company to launch an integrated bio-refinery demo plant, Praj is currently executing three commercial plants for the Indian OMCs. There are 12 such plants by the government, where work has started on five and Praj is working on three of these plants.

CNG’s complementary renewable transportation fuel is CBG and Praj’s demo plant will test, improve, and optimize production of CBG from different feedstock like biomass, press mud, and a variety of agri was, paper mill pith, dairy, and poultry waste.

“The push into bio-fuel technologies is also followed with the release of Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation policy in October 2018, envisaging implementation of 5,000 compressed bio-gas plants in the following five years,” said Pramod Chaudhari, Executive Chairman, Praj Industries. Praj is working with these new-gen technologies since 2009 and the government’s 2018 bio-fuel is turning point for the bio-fuel industry,” said Chaudhari.

Set up by OMCs and the Rol, the success of these plants will pave the way for private investment flowing in this sector, Chaudhari indicated. According to Chaudhari, it will be generating additional income for the farmers and also deal with the problem of pollution caused by burning agri waste. The government announced an attractive price of Rs. 46 per kilo for this CBG for three years and a 10-year off-take contract which made it a very viable proposition.

Based on 2G technology, the three plants target on completion within 2020 end and early of 2021, Chaudhari stated. An investment of almost Rs. 600 crore is required for plant and machinery.

Shreenath Mhaskoba Sugar Factory conducted the ground-breaking demo plant integration for CBG, is adjacent to the existing 2G technology bio-refinery demo facility by Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of High-Level Committee and Scientific Advisory Committee on Hydrocarbons, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Kakodkar stated that with the advent of 2nd gen-tech, bio-energy’s significant role will play in the energy mix, and approach for the integration of bio-ethanol, liquid fuel, and CBG, a gaseous fuel, will capture larger value from biomass.
