With adoption of new technologies and the shift towards automation, buildings are becoming smart today. Internet of Things (IoT) technology helps the buildings become smarter in many ways as this technology is capable of connecting large number of sensors with the help of which it allows data collection in real time. Also, after collecting this data from smart buildings, IoT analyses it to make buildings more efficient and more user friendly. Almost 70 percent of organisations intend to increase their investment in smart building technology in the near future.

Experts believe that IoT has transformed Building Management System as it has disrupted long established business models. “IoT has offered significant new opportunities to improve the efficiency of buildings, raise the productivity of employees, and help in development of innovative services”, says Prabhu Ramachandran, Founder and CEO, Facilio Inc. The global market for IoT in buildings will continue to expand rapidly over the next few years and is expected to reach $112 billion by the end of 2024.

Hassle-free Upgrades

IoT powered buildings provide great flexibility to the network architecture. One can easily relocate existing sensors or install additional ones along the lines as renovation needs arise. It is a well- known fact that IoT sensors are inexpensive and self-contained, as a result of which they are easy to install and require less maintenance. IoT devices are coupled with scalable, robust, low power connectivity and can be deployed across the facility to capture detailed insights into diverse building functions and distributed assets.

These insights into building aspects can be unified in a single platform to enable streamlined and integrated management activities. IoT technology has helped in automated execution of relevant workflows like maintenance scheduling, intuitive equipment reconfiguration etc.

360 Degree View

Internet of Things provides proper view of the building condition and helps the maintenance staff to focus on the critical areas of the building. For example, if there is water leakage in building, IoT sensors can sense it and take action as per early stage pipe failures. It will enable immediate valve shut-down and can prevent severe damage caused by water leakage. In present market, there are options of wireless IoT sensors which are capable to offer unparalleled visibility to the people residing in building. It will ultimately help the people in dealing with emergencies such as fire safety, security of the premises, waste management and conditions of equipment.

More Control over HVAC Products

IoT technology gives more control and options to the users over how they operate their HVAC. IoT can instruct its sensors to turn the HVAC on and off as needed throughout the day, by measuring the level of carbon dioxide in real time. The system automatically reduces the air intake from outside, if the level of carbon dioxide is in line with the guidelines of building. On the contrary, if the level of carbon dioxide is approaching the limit, the system brings the additional air from outside. IoT technology provides high control over HVAC systems which in turn helps in saving energy and money of the user.

Users who are striving to meet sustainability requirements, IoT technology can be used to monitor their current energy consumption patterns, analyse the data and depending on that recommend the ways to reduce the energy usage. It can also be useful for the users who want to reduce their energy bills. IoT sensors can give them insight into how and when their facility uses energy, based on which the user can strategically reduce their energy consumption.

Leveraging Real Time Data

Internet of Things (IoT) technology makes buildings smarter by creating real time interconnectivity. IoT has the ability to harvest data which provides unprecedented views into the actual workings of the building. It also provides a view to accentuate and improve these workings from automated parking to water and energy usage in the building premises. IoT makes it easier to operate these operations and ensures to provide the right information to the concerned people, so that they can take the decisions accordingly.

Provides Security

Developers who are creating IoT technology for smart buildings are keeping many aspects in mind while developing these solutions. The foremost aspect is safety and security of the building to avoid any kind of hazardous activity. Developers created these solutions, so that people residing at buildings should feel relaxed and secure.

The Future Outlook

There is no doubt that IoT market is growing by leaps and bounds in the last few years. The management of buildings require on-site visits, so the buildings which are geographically situated at a distant place would need more time and money to manage. IoT will continue to give life to smart building solutions, and one of the main factors for its popularity is the improved access of information provided by it. People have become accustomed to have information readily available at their fingertips after the surge of IoT in Building Management Systems. With time, we can expect this market to adopt revolutionary solutions that will make smart living a reality.
