crkThe contract signing for a new Integrated Health Information Management System (IHIMS), August 9, 2016 by officials of the Ministry of Health and its managing agency, the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA), will reap major dividends for the public healthcare sector in The Bahamas and its clients, Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville said.

Dr. Darville said the execution of the agreement and the intended implementation of a single medical records platform across all public healthcare services, represents the culmination of a “decades long journey” for the healthcare sector of The Bahamas.

“In the 21st century, more than at any other time in human history, information is power. Timely, accurate and accessible patient information and medical records can have a tremendous positive impact on patient satisfaction and health outcomes,” Dr. Darville said.

“A top tier health information system also positively impacts inventory management, service delivery and productivity at our public health facilities.”

Dr. Darville said the aforementioned benefits were the “principle reasons” behind the decision to select, purchase and implement the IHIMS throughout the local public healthcare sector.

“IHIMS will provide for the launch of an integrated information system platform for hospitals and clinics throughout the public healthcare provider network,” Dr. Darville said.

“The evaluation and selection process for IHIMS has been a necessarily rigorous exercise that was led by the PHA and Department of Public Health (DPH) with material assistance from Sanigest International, Santa Rosa Consulting and the National Health Insurance Technology lead. At this time I would like to thank all key stakeholders for their tireless efforts in managing and contributing to this process.”

Dr. Darville said the involvement of NHI consultants and others in the process “speaks to the Public Hospitals Authority looking ahead to the approaching launch of a National Primary Health Insurance Programme.”

“I am pleased to say that by every measure, the features of the IHIMS Platform is adequate to meet the needs of NHI,” Dr. Darville added.

He commended the leadership of the Public Hospitals Authority and the Department of Public Health for their diligence in realizing one of the key benchmarks in healthcare development for the nation.
