Every year on March 8 Women’s Day is celebrated world over. The day is marked as a tribute to the immense contributions’ women have given to humanity. International Women’s Day is about honoring and respecting the women around us, and it is also about sharing and celebrating the stories of successful women among us. Here are the stories of a few self-made Indian women from the previous year, that left a mark in our history through their ground-breaking achievements and stories of shattering the walls of gender divide:

Ankiti Bose – India’s First Female Unicorn

A fashion junkie at heart, Ankiti Bose back in the year 2014 was out on a holiday trip to Thailand with some of her friends. There she was enthralled by the sheer size of the Weekend Market at Bangkok with more than 15,000 stores and 12,000 street merchants, making it the largest of its kind on Earth. It was immediately at that moment when she began to imagine such shopping extravaganzas online. This eventually inspired her to start Zilingo that helps independent fashion designers and retailers to sell directly to the customers online.

Today, headquartered at Singapore, Ankiti Bose has grown her South-East Asian e-commerce site into a global platform with more than 7 million active users. Within a span of just 4 years, the 27-year-oldentrepreneur has given birth to a Fashion Empire, and now she on course to be the first ever female Billionaire in India.

Geetha Manjunath – Combating Breast Cancer With The Help Of Machine Learning

A rare and inspiring women leader in the IT domain, Geetha Manjunath has had an illustrious career of research and publication having specialized expertise in AI, Machine Learning, Computer Vision and Data Analysis. Her research in the above areas has resulted in development of several innovative prototypes, patents, publications, and new products. She is also the Founder of Niramai Health Analytics – a firm which is developing a novel solution for detecting early-stage breast cancer using machine learning techniques.

Suchita Salwan – Helps People Re-Discover Cities

In the year 2012, a young Suchita Salwan was working as a Marketing Executive for BBC in New Delhi. As an uninhibited explorer she would spend her weekends exploring the lesser-known tourist attractions, a new eating outlet or simply navigate around shops that offered a good bargain. All these experiences she would share on her blog on Tumblr, to help her friends discover a new side of Delhi.

What started as a humble blog, ended up attracting millions of viewers. Suchita Salwan would take the idea one-step forward, and would go on to add up a host of services and recommendations. Simply called the Little Black Book – the platform today has an active user base of 1.5 million and a loyal Twitter following.  The app offers local recommendations and discoveries for food, events, lifestyle and cultural events across three cities of Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai. And, unlike BookMyShow or Zomato, Little Black Book helps users unravel secrets and experiences that are unknown.

Nupur Garg – A Shining Example In The Private Equity Ecosystem

Nupur Garg’s entire career has been about finding herself in a room full of men. Ever since the year 1997, after completing her Chartered Accountancy when she joined PwC, Nupur has been shattering the glass walls that had always existed in the male dominated ecosystem of Equity.

Since then, her career has been dotted with extraordinary achievements. For instance, back in the year 2007, when she joined International Finance Corporation (IFC), an investment arm of the World Bank. She was also heavily involved in pilotingthe de-centralized risk management framework into delegated decision-making in the Asia Pacific region.

After her departure from IFC in February 2019, Garg joined the board of Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) as an independent director.  At present, Nupur Garg is also an independent member of the investment committee of the ₹10,000-crore Fund of Funds for startups that is managed by Sidbi and the $1 billion Fund of Funds managed by National Investment and Infrastructure Fund.
