As Coronavirus Outbreak Shows No Decline Auto Makers in India Suspend Production

Automakers in India including Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and Hyundai Motor have decided to stop production in the country due to Covid-19 outbreak. The move of India’s automobile makers followed the decision of global automobile makers to shutdown down plants across Europe, the USA, Canada and Mexico last week.

Mahindra & Mahindra said that it will manufacture ventilators in its manufacturing plants for coronavirus patients as the situation in the country starts becoming serious. Mahindra has already stopped production at one of its plants in the state of Maharashtra that has recorded the highest number of deaths and confirmed corona cases in the country, and will suspend work at two other manufacturing plants from today. “A lockdown over the next few weeks will help flatten the curve and moderate the peak pressure on medical care,” Mahindra said in a statement. Mahindra will offer the government its holiday resorts as temporary care facilities, helping the country combat the epidemic.

Maruti Suzuki said that it would immediately stop production and operations at its facilities in the state of Haryana.  Hero MotoCorp Ltd, India’s top-selling bike maker said on Sunday that it has stopped manufacturing at all its plants in the county, along with Bangladesh and Colombia. Mercedes-Benz, Fiat, Bajaj Auto have stopped production at their plants in Pune till March 31. However, the duration of the shutdown will depend on the future situation of the coronavirus and its spread.

The Government of India has ordered the state governments to shut down all the districts with confirmed coronavirus cases. And a number of states including Punjab, Telangana, Delhi, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh have announced shutdown across all the districts till 31 march as a precautionary measure to control the coronavirus outbreak. Except the essentials, all services including educational institutes, private, offices, autonomous bodies, business establishments, malls, shops, factories, and public transport will remain closed till the end of this month in these states.
