Indian Railways affixes major limitations in running trains with HOG technology

Indian Railways has started to equip its LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches with HOG System ( Head on Generation) to reduce its dependence on fossil fuel.

If we talk about the HOG system, electricity supply which will run lights, fans, ACs and other equipment in coaches will be powered by electric locomotives without any requirement of using diesel generators.

Not only enabling more free spaces to build extra compartments for abled people, but the reduced requirement for on-board diesel will also make an extra room for parcels as well. Hence, these coaches are being built in the railway coach factories and will be in use very soon in the near future.

However, it is very vital that the HOG system of rakes and locomotives are fully functional and free of any kind of defect so as to avoid inconvenience for the passengers. While speaking of rakes, both locomotive and coaching rakes are maintained at different locations, and when proceeding to combined testing both the rakes and locomotives are needed at a single place. Hence, there rises the chance of creating a delay for the train operations.

In a statement issued by the North Central Railway zone of Indian Railways it said," The Electric locomotive shed Kanpur through provision of “test switch" in HOG circuitry which bypasses need of rake being attached to loco to test functioning of HOG converter. "

Through this innovative arrangement now locomotive HOG system can be tested independently thus any possible defect can be rectified in time," it further added.

Today, North Central Railway is utilizing HOG technology, which has helped in saving 75,000 liters diesel annually. Furthermore, in order to cater all HOG rakes in various primary train on NCR which includes Shramshakti Express, Chambal Express, Prayagraj Express, Shatabdi Express, and Humsafar Express.
