Distributed Computing Infrastructure: Opportunities and Challenges"Ultimately, the cloud is the latest example of Schumpeterian creative destruction: creating wealth for those who exploit it; and leading to the demise of those that don’t,"  Joe Weinman, Senior VP at Telx Computer network technologies have made a rapid stride over the last few decades. After the introduction of the Internet, the networking of computers through cloud computing has been the next pioneering step towards computing technologies. When it was originally offered, the public cloud revolutionized data management for many organizations. Distributed cloud computing is the next phase in this journey after the private and hybrid clouds.

Distributed cloud computing can be revolutionary for businesses that face security and privacy concerns. The distributed cloud market size is projected to reach USD 5.0 Billion by 2026. The distributed cloud, in essence, is next-generation cloud computing that improves on the advantages of private and hybrid clouds, such as cost-effectiveness, scalability, and data backup. In this article, let’s explore the different opportunities that distributed cloud computing brings for you.

Low Latency

Distributed cloud computing is a game-changing solution to the latency problem. It can enable quicker and more responsive services by putting key processing tasks closer to end-users and allows businesses to handle data locally instead of sending it to centralized cloud computing servers for analysis. Distributed cloud computing may considerably enhance performance speed by placing more processes closer to the source and transmitting far fewer data back to the network's hub. For data-driven technologies like driverless vehicles, where even a few milliseconds of latency might be disastrous, distributed cloud computing becomes a must.

Autonomous cloud computing

Organizations can receive storage, processing, and networking in a micro-cloud that is separate from the centralized cloud via distributed cloud computing. This brought computing closer to the user, hence improving security. The distributed cloud approach provides greater agility, allowing businesses to achieve better business outcomes.

Resiliency

System failures are less likely in a distributed cloud environment. Because a system crash on one server has no influence on the others, such failures may be dealt with in the most cost-effective manner possible. Smaller, decentralized units reduce the effect of failures and reduce the requirement for spare capacity allocation, making the organization more robust to such uncertainty.

Speed and increased connectivity

Cloud computing on a distributed platform is quicker than single-computer systems. One of the benefits of a distributed cloud system is that queries may be sent to a server with specific user information, rather than all requests going to a single machine that can become overloaded. Furthermore, requests are directed to servers that are physically close to the person who needs the data or that have a fast network connection, resulting in less time and resources being spent dealing with network traffic and bottlenecks.

Scalability

The flexibility of a distributed cloud system allows enterprises to scale up capacity as needed.

Because separate applications operate on independent servers, resources may be simply added or deleted to scale up or down without affecting the cloud architecture as a whole.

Although distributed cloud computing brings the aforementioned benefits, it is also accompanied by a few sets of challenges for the organizations to deal with.

Increased complexity

Distributed cloud computing systems are more complicated to set up than their centralized counterparts. They're also challenging to maintain, troubleshoot, and debug. Software that can manage security and communications is required for distributed systems.

High initial investments

The initial cost for setting up the distributed cloud computing system can be high for organizations when compared with the single system alternatives. This also includes an increased processing overhead cost; thus leading to increased costs for computation and information exchange.

Security concerns

Distributed cloud computing includes the use of multiple nodes connected in an open system across different geographical locations. This makes the management of distributed computing a difficult factor.

Loss of data

The instances of data loss in distributed cloud computing are possible. It may happen, when data is moved from the origin node to the destination node, the data can be lost. This results in some important messages being lost, which is detrimental to a company.

Overloading distributed cloud

Another disadvantage of distributed cloud computing is the overloading of nodes. This can happen when numerous nodes are sending data to a particular destination. In this case, the total infrastructure can get jammed and this may lead to performance fluctuation.

Lack of technical support

For an organization with limited technical expertise, assistance from cloud companies becomes detrimental. In another word, during the time of any disruption, the organization becomes majorly dependent on the technical assistance provided by the cloud service provider. If the cloud provider fails to provide timely assistance, it can lead the organization to massive chaos.

In a nutshell, it can be concluded that distributed cloud computing comes up with a number of opportunities for organizations. In the coming years, one of the major factors that will drive the growth of IT solutions is customer experience, which is existing in distributed cloud computing. With advantages like superior performance and increased scalability, the distributed cloud is a better alternative for those companies dealing with high workloads and data. However, the challenges regarding security and complexity need to be addressed.
