Atmanirbhar Bharat: Here’s a reality check for Made in India Smartphones

A major focus of official drive on self-reliance, the reality check for Made-in-India smartphones is that the actual value of components which are sourced abroad is about 85 percent of the device’s cost.

In the segments of high tech components such as chipsets, display, camera modules, and circuit boards, Indian manufacturing is either absent or minimal.

Hence, manufacturing in India is limited to assembly-test-mark-pack facilities while these are designed and made in China or Taiwan.

Apart from the manufacturing-linked incentive programme, India has launched two schemes for part makers. While assuming billions of dollars in funding in areas such as semiconductor, experts consider a self-ample manufacturing ecosystem will want at the very least a decade.

However, it will stay a powerful problem until corporations commit huge capital and authorities offer beneficent incentives.

Companies such as Samsung, Qualcomm, Mediatek can switch extra analysis and design their products in Indian sub-continent itself.

However, versus tens of 1000’s in fabrication vegetation, it will make use of a few excessive talent individuals.
