5 Indians Who Made it to Time's 100 most influential List 2020

According to Wikipedia, Time 100 was first published in 1999 as the result of a debate among American academics, politicians, and journalists, the list is now a highly publicized annual event. Being selected on this list has since then become an significant honor. They are especially chosen to be recognized for changing the world, regardless of the consequences of their actions. While, if we talk about its selection, with nominations coming from the Time 100 alumni and the magazine's international writing staff, the final list of influential individuals is exclusively chosen by Time editors. 

There have been many times when Indians have been selected in the Time 100 due to their specific work which has caused some significant changes in the world.  Speaking of which, here are 5 Indians in Time's 100 most influential list 2020: 

Sundar Pichai

First on the list would be Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who has been listed as the TIME's 100 most influential people in the world. Due to his sensational work which has helped not only the aforementioned companies but has immensely contributed to digitalizing the world. 

"Sundar Pichai’s uniquely American story -- emigrating from India as a young adult and working his way to become CEO of a $1 trillion corporation -- represents the best of what we aspire for our society. He used his natural gifts and strong work ethic to rise through the ranks of Google (now Alphabet) by leading many of their most successful products, such as Drive, Gmail and Maps, and officially took the reins of the company in December," wrote CEO of JP Morgan Jamie Dimon wrote in the TIME magazine.

 

Narendra Modi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only politician from India who has made it to the coveted list. Explaining why Modi made the list, TIME editor Karl Vick wrote, "Though almost all of India’s Prime Ministers have come from the nearly 80% of the population that is Hindu, only Modi has governed as if no one else matters. First elected on a populist promise of empowerment, his Hindu-­nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party rejected not only elitism but also pluralism, specifically targeting India’s Muslims."

​Ravindra Gupta

Last year in March, a UK patient walked free of HIV because of a study led by Professor Ravindra Gupta led a study last year in March which aided a UK patient walk free of HIV; the second patient only to be cured of HIV.

Hence in recognition of his work, Ravindra Gupta was appointed as the professor of clinical microbiology at the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease. 

Bilkis - The ‘dadi from Shaheen Bagh’

Bilkis who is a 82 year old woman was one of the prominent faces of the protest for her sheer resistance despite her age. She was among the many women who sat in protest all day into the night at Shaheen Bagh. Hence for this, she has been nominated as one of TIME 100 most influential people in the world. 

Ayushmann Khurrana

Featuring in films that break the stereotype of masculinity, Ayushmann Khurrana has gained much attention for his first movie, where he played the role of a sperm donor. 

Deepika Padukone wrote in the magazine, “The reason you and I talk about him today is because of the impact he has been able to create through memorable films and iconic characters. Where male protagonist roles often fall into the trap of stereotypical masculinity, Ayushmann has successfully and convincingly transformed into characters who challenge those very stereotypes," wrote Deepika Padukone in the magazine.
