| | MAY 20174CIOReviewEditorialVOL 5 · ISSUE 5 - 7 · MAY 24, 2017Digital print is typically more expensive than proven analogue platforms. The economics and productivity of digital technology is continuing to improve, making it increasingly price-competitive against analogue printing processes for more than just short runs. Eliminating plates, many prepress processes, and simplifying press make-ready times means digital methods are much lower cost to set up than analogue alternatives. While the unit cost of print is then higher, overall digital jobs are lower cost for short runs. The switch to digital communications across media, advertising etc. has had a great effect upon the printing industry worldwide. The impact is more profound in countries where these markets have reached the top in terms of developments.Digital screens are now challenging outdoor media and the same goes for in-store advertising. However, areas like commercial print, publication print and advertising print will continue to grow. Greater availability of MFPs could help make print a more attractive option, but in the end, if consumers, business and government switch to digital media at large then it could be the case within 5-10 years that some of these printers will become dormant. We have witnessed many transformations in the printing industry starting from offset then digital and now printing electronics and 3D printing.Adoption of these technologies is having a direct effect on the business market in which print service providers operate. In future greater flexibility and more simple supply chains will mean packaging can be printed on digital machines more quickly. This will be aided by the increasing availability of web-to-pack portals that will reduce the administration and prepress costs of producing press-ready artwork saving the cost of digital labels and packaging. In this issue, CIOReview presents to you 20 Most Promising Print and Packaging Solution Providers who have successfully helped organizations with their innovative offerings.
