In the 1950s, homeowners became aware of the possibilities of automation. Dishwashers caught the eye of the general public. By the 1970s, the number of households in possession of a dishwasher was on the increase. We clearly have come a long way from automated dishwashers. Apple popularized digital voice assistants by adding Siri to the iPhone 4s, but the field of devices that support voice interaction has expanded considerably since 2011. Amazon added Alexa to its Echo lineup, the Google Assistant powers Google Home, and Cortana can help you navigate Windows 10. Innovations like Tesla battery storage, smart thermostats, grid credits and smart meters are revolutionizing our power consumption. This, most importantly, also has a positive impact on both the environment and our bank accounts. As with any industry in India, automation for residences has become a commonplace. The market is crowded with several players giving away multiple product offerings at competitive pricing. At the heart of this trend is a critical shift in the home from electro-thermal-mechanical devices to the `electronified' home that features self-monitoring, adaptive learning systems. The market for just Home automation is estimated to be USD 3.2 Billion by 2020. If IoT were to become common place, then we're looking at a multi-billion dollar opportunity in the Indian market.
