Finding the Right Mix of Business Functionality and Security

By

Founded in 1996, FishNet Security Inc. is a provider of information security solutions and has raised $12 million from Edgewater.

The so-called move to the cloud is the biggest change in IT since the advent of client-server distributed systems. We do not believe all IT will be "in the cloud", but we see most progressive organizations moving down a path that may have a number of stops along the way such as increasingly virtualized, automated, software-defined and often delivered from not just one, but multiple cloud IaaS providers.
This change has already forced the box vendors to rethink their strategy as evidenced by declining server and storage shipments from the major hardware vendors. While they may be in many ways the first to be impacted, the security industry is not far behind.

Security will be Delivered via SaaS Model

As infrastructure is increasingly delivered as a service, so will all of the ancillary key tools, including security. This means it has to be delivered via a SaaS model, billed by usage, and more importantly it must be a direct extension of the customer experience of the core infrastructure-as-a-service offering. If that experience is highly automated and driven by a click from a control panel, without any human intervention, then so must the ancillary tools like security. If it is highly consultative, then the ancillary experience must be also.
The evolution of the industry will be about unifying the customer experience across all elements of IT, from computer to storage, network, backup and security.

From a technology perspective, everyone will need to figure out how to solve the tough problems of multi-tenancy and SaaS delivery, as well as problems associated with automatically scaling IT environments and ephemeral networks. Once technical hurdles are overcome, success in the cloud will require the means to integrate with all of the ways cloud providers acquire customers. Entrepreneurs will face these challenges, but will do so without the baggage of legacy customers.
