EVERYTHING IS GOING MOBILE

By

Ericsson (OMX: ERIC-A, OMX: ERIC-B, NASDAQ: ERIC) is a Swedish multinational technology company that provides and operates telecommunications networks, television and video systems, and related services. The company has a market cap of $35.90 billion

One of the most important trends in the business is that everything is going mobile. The uptake of mobile broadband, driven by increasing use of smartphones, tablets and apps is driving change for people, business and society. We believe that the three driving forces mobility, broadband and cloud are combining to create what we call the "networked society", where anything that benefits a connection will be connected. By 2020 there will be more than 50 billion connected devices.

Ericsson itself is experiencing high speed networks, bigger screens and the ability to be connected 24/7 which is creating an impact on our global workforce of more than 110,000 employees spread across 180 countries. The need for collaboration beyond borders has also increased; breaking the barriers of silo working, this has put new demands on our internal infrastructure, capabilities and always expected to be delivered at a premium service level.

• Subscriptions for mobile PCs and tablets are expected to grow from 250 million last year (2012) to 850 million in 2018.

• There will be 3.3 billion smartphone subscriptions by 2018. (1.1 billion in 2012)

• On mobile broadband, so either mobiles or PCs and tablets, there will be 6.5 billion subscriptions. (1.5 billion 2012 increased 50 percent YoY in 2012!)

• By 2018 there will be 9.3 billion mobile subscriptions – (6.3 billion in 2012) that is more subscriptions than people on the planet!

We are seeing the opportunities and challenges as the telecom and IT industries converge driving more and more services into the cloud thereby increasing the degree of virtualization across the applications, platforms and infrastructure layers. Virtualizing more into the cloud requires a smarter way to manage and analyze big data capitalizing on the value from this for more predictable and tailored service offerings to our key stakeholders.

Implementing Cost Efficient and Value Creating Solutions

The technologies are there. It is more about the ability to move from the conceptual level in new areas like Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud to implementing cost efficient and value creating solutions in a company´s day-to-day business.

IT Service delivery is still very traditional and there are enormous opportunities for process optimization, automation and so on. Having a good balance between on-site and remote delivery depending on the phases of a project is key.
Our suppliers can be a lot more active in working with their clients in transforming the cost structure from "run" to "build".

Today's CIO and his Challenges

Transforming highly integrated application environments faster than the business demands, and at the same time managing this within the current opex and capex levels is a challenge as consolidation, standardization and harmonization, across a complex and geographically distributed IT environment, takes time.

Information security in the cloud is a challenge but it can be handled. Old paradigms will not work. We have already embarked on the route to adapting information security to the challenges of a cloud environment by protecting information at the source rather than protecting everything.
Setting a solid foundation and tools for high-impact analytics, influencing business decisions with high quality analysis from fast changing data is critical and so is predicting the future before it happens.
