Build Healthcare Solutions with an Indian Perspective

By

Based in Delhi, Rockland Hospital is a multi-speciality chain of hospitals.

Technology is evolving every day, but one should always be aware about the requirements and value addition the new technology is going to bring. First IT should have clarity about the business needs of the organization. Then there should be a complete blueprint and timelines prepared with the input of the management. Regardless of the technology in question, knowing the basics help us understand how it works. So, one has to define requirements and try to gain its knowledge by assessing the resources available to us and prepare case studies for management.

Efficient use of Technology

Healthcare is becoming one of the most technology dependent industries. The biggest challenge for Healthcare industry is to make users understand the importance of Technology. Medical equipments and healthcare software’s generate lots of data. The users handling this data should be able to make right sense out of it.

It is very important for the healthcare sector to become technically competent as everything from the patient’s personal record, case history, finances to inventory is in digital format. The biggest challenge we have faced is to make sure that end users adapt to the technology provided to them and use it efficiently. To overcome this challenge we try to involve users from the beginning of any solution so that they can see for themselves what value addition the new solution is going to bring and how is it going to improve their performance.

Tech Trends for the Healthcare Industry

Mobile health & Big Data are two emerging technologies which can completely change how healthcare is delivered. Mobile technology will help to increase access to care in emerging markets and transform the developed world’s costly healthcare behemoths into less expensive, prevention-based and patient-focused systems.

Big Data or in general Analytics will greatly enhance the transition to authentic data-driven health care, allowing health care professionals to improve the standard of care based on millions of cases, to define needs for subpopulations, to make more personalized decisions for individual patients, and to identify and intervene for population groups at risk for poor outcomes. Big Data can contribute in improving the quality and efficiency of health care delivery; detecting diseases at earlier stages, when they can be treated most successfully: managing specific health populations and individuals; and detecting health care fraud more quickly and efficiently.

Indian Perspective to Solutions

Currently most of the solution providers are providing off the shelf solutions. Most of the solution providers look to the West for standards hence solutions are not compatible with the Indian style of functioning. This leads to heavy customization that again is not good as it has its own pitfalls. The problem is that the growth of most solution providers is driven by winning contracts with new hospitals and not by creating better solutions.

Consolidation of IT systems and engaging users is the top most priority for Rockland-IT. Rockland is in its growth phase and is in the process of rolling out new web based HIS which will be hosted at our central location. We are working on hub and spoke model for deployment hosting both data and application on central location within our organization. All our deployments are patient centric which means all the solutions deployed are some way or the other going to benefit the patient.
