Bosch India: Data Driven Approach Meets Domain Knowledge

By

The big data and analytics market is expected to grow six times faster than the overall information technology market. This rapid growth potential can be attributed to the way analytics applications are finding their feet in sectors which have traditionally been late movers for big data technologies. With its increasing adoption in verticals such as automotive, manufacturing and healthcare, organizations are looking for specialist service providers with a deep understanding of these specific domains. Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions, the technology powerhouse of Bosch in India, combines its deep domain expertise with a data driven approach to offer such niche analytics solutions.

“We are a global service provider in many of these domains. We have in-house capabilities in the areas of automotive engineering, manufacturing, healthcare and other sectors. Our data science team leverages this domain expertise available in-house to solve specific problems of enterprises,” says Lavanya Uppala, Big Data & Analytics Program Head at Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions. The company has deep understanding of cyber physical systems and identifies the right data capturing mechanisms to commence the data collection process. “Be it a manufacturing firm or a large scale fleet operator, we are able to put systems in place that generate and capture the data which can be made available for data analytics” adds Lavanya.

Unlike other service providers, the biggest differentiator for the company is the experience gained through solving problems in-house. This knowledge is utilized for delivering world class solutions for its customers as well. This Center of Excellence (CoE) for Data Analytics handles cases to improve bottom-line as well as drives top-line for the entire Bosch group and for global customers.

The team supports in solving business challenges of enterprises across multiple functions such as product engineering, production and operations, supply chain, sales & marketing and customer service by leveraging interesting insights and identifying new opportunities for them. The team is adept at combining the customer information with enterprise systems data to come up with decisive insights and predictions.

For every domain, the analytics team identifies the structured and unstructured data by comprehending every stage of operation with appropriate models to come up with beneficial business insights. For instance, in the automotive domain, the analytics team has enabled warranty managers of large automotive manufacturers with an analytics-driven early warning system to predict emerging warranty issues in the field. The team combined data sets across the value chain to predict potential warranty claims at least three months in advance which significantly reduced the time taken for root cause analysis, thereby preventing potential recalls.

In the manufacturing sector, analysis of data streams from machines and enterprise systems have helped plant managers to improve operational efficiency, reduce scrap and predict component failures to reduce downtime. The business impacts are significant in terms of cost savings of millions of dollars and greater visibility over complex manufacturing processes.

With many similar achievements to its name, Bosch India’s analytics team plans to focus on Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 segments in the near future and is going to leverage analytics capabilities for these areas.
