According to a recent survey by Gartner, more than half of organizations surveyed have adopted open source software solutions as part of their IT strategy. One of the myths about open source software is that IT organizations adopt it because it is free. As nearly everyone knows, open source software is lower cost alternative to proprietary software. Although open source's price tag is clearly an important driver, it is not the key advantage of open source. While cost is definitely a factor, the first and foremost reason why people are choosing open source is because it is flexible and reliable enough to meet their needs.

Open source has been one of the most significant cultural developments in IT and beyond over the last two decades, and has shown that individuals, working together over the Internet, can create products that rival and sometimes beat those of giant corporations. It has also shown how companies can become more innovative, more nimble and more cost-effective by building on the efforts of community work.

Open source software has so many potential benefits that in many cases, agencies should at least consider it when technology is a factor in solving problems or expanding services. And because open source software is so pervasive, all major products are graded just as commercial products are. Agencies also can connect easily to open source software communities online.

Virtualization is another new frontier, and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) is gaining ground in this space. The end result of this infrastructure is that users can access their data and applications from nearly any device, anywhere.
